Capital Arts District

Capital Arts District is a master plan concept that aims to unify arts and cultural institutions through a central greenspace in Downtown Jackson, Mississippi.

  • The project uses public space, art, and branding to connect institutions including: the Mississippi Museum of Art, the Mississippi Arts Center, Thalia Mara Hall, the Planetarium, and the Jackson Convention Center. The design aims to create better pedestrian connectivity, focal points, and areas to gather. In addition to the new central greenspace, the design improves the front of Thalia Mara Hall, and improves Town Creek as a stormwater retention area. Tree developed the park masterplan and is working the Museum to build the Museum Trail on the southside of the district.

The Arts District proposals explore better connectivity between the arts buildings through trails and a central public greenspace.

TREE developed three concepts, each with different design approaches. The concept names included “Clear,” “Modify,” and “Build”. The names are based on exploring the options of removing, renovating, or rebuilding the Mississippi Arts Center.
