Capital Arts District

Capital Arts District is a master plan concept that aims to unify arts and cultural institutions in Downtown Jackson, Mississippi.

  • The project uses public space, art, and branding to connect 5 institutions including: the Mississippi Museum of Art, the Mississippi Arts Center, Thalia Mara Hall, the Planetarium, and the Jackson Convention Center.

The design explores three options for a single block, that range from more minimal interventions to more bold design solutions. The three design methods are titled CLEAR, MODIFY, and BUILD. The design focuses on creating better connectivity in the public space between the buildings.

We also developed a conceptual framework plan for the surrounding 22 block area. This plan explores public space connectivity, infill development, pedestrian and bicycle mobility, stormwater management, and new land use.

The plans explore better connectivity between the arts buildings through a central public greenspace

Tree developed three concepts that had different approaches. The concept names included “clear, modify, and build”. The names are based on removing, renovating, or building a new arts center building.
